Wow! Has it really been 8 months since my last blog post? I have so much quilty news to share, but first I have to reveal my latest work in progress.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In 1969 Arthur Gmeiner gifted the <a href="https://gmeinerartcenter.wordpress.com/">Gmeiner Arts and Cultural Center</a> to the town of Wellsboro PA and I am lucky enough to "work" there part-time as a docent. In celebration of it's 50th birthday, I seized the opportunity to try a new quilting technique and started working on this mosaic quilt, based on a self-portrait that Arthur painted in 1972. The top is now pieced and waiting for me to figure out how I want to quilt it... </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhggsvJ1kP9dQFxmjDmT7-zLxjmRIGdUQoPm06ajC29Yo1ug1tELSlrP5_d-vBQU7lIdOXJ4hlHUheWDlHwCHZkqdNMYLPHEsS_ZJ9DthYoeC728yTr_D-ydsZtjDTLI50IgGfqTjINJFbQ/s1600/48935827367_0ff7b5bd7b_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhggsvJ1kP9dQFxmjDmT7-zLxjmRIGdUQoPm06ajC29Yo1ug1tELSlrP5_d-vBQU7lIdOXJ4hlHUheWDlHwCHZkqdNMYLPHEsS_ZJ9DthYoeC728yTr_D-ydsZtjDTLI50IgGfqTjINJFbQ/s320/48935827367_0ff7b5bd7b_k.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I learned so much from this project, and there are definitely things I would do differently next time, but that's what learning is all about.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of the quilters whose work I admire (adore!) is <a href="http://www.timnatarr.com/">Timna Tarr</a>. She has perfected this technique she calls Stitched Mosaic and has just completed a series of 12 barnyard animal quilts that is just amazing. <a href="http://www.timnatarr.com/blog">Click here</a> to see them all. I saw her do a demo of this technique on The Quilt Show and couldn't wait to give it a try. This seemed like a good opportunity, so here's my first attempt.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I started with a poster size enlargement of a picture I took of Arthur's painting, then overlaid a clear vinyl 2" diagonal grid, and proceeded to build the quilt, one 2" square at a time. Here is a pic of the photo and overlay pinned to my design board.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq9yKxF7sAKAwEndNTZF4kII-6vY3khMHNi3FPzkI8DXyNT_2sS38oem7D-XjIPDCcGoQZM_PQpt1af74dZkT7CVUdwSkYuBJjDy2NkcyidtWPvviboBZfvqM_k1ibeHFbnmftLrnVnkRV/s1600/48935829612_bd2ec501ef_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq9yKxF7sAKAwEndNTZF4kII-6vY3khMHNi3FPzkI8DXyNT_2sS38oem7D-XjIPDCcGoQZM_PQpt1af74dZkT7CVUdwSkYuBJjDy2NkcyidtWPvviboBZfvqM_k1ibeHFbnmftLrnVnkRV/s320/48935829612_bd2ec501ef_k.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The hardest part for me was deciding which fabrics to use where. You approach each square separately and hope and pray that they will all blend well when they're sewn together at the end. This pic shows part of the quilt assembled.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I added Arthur's initials to his pocket hankie...</div>

And here's a couple of close-ups. I'm not totally happy with how his facial features turned out, but from a distance it's ok. And it's not quilted yet, so that will change the final appearance too.</div>

OBW #2, now known as "Whoo's Hiding?" is complete. I'm really happy with my quilting choices on this one. I emphasized the central hexagon ring with straight lines in charcoal thread, then quilted continuous curves on the rest of the hexagons with lighter neutral thread, and finished off with piano keys in the ombre/bird borders. The owl is the only bird in the original fabric panel that didn't make it, intact, into the quilt borders, but I used the entire panel for the hexagon portion, so the owls are in there. Can you find them?</div>

I finished assembling the quilt top of <a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2018/09/one-block-wonder-2.html">OBW #2</a> today.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjklehDEKjX7AxhvMAnodHovbMv6zT0dSIpFwbT4SKdbke_QCo57kqRA4lrWZlatIbBwAzE90SvSVVo6XK6Ytl9CjNoWaxjjvqYrODiYt20uv1wxAJX2eh8vtPZDMjo18zl5gISSdiQpXIv/s1600/30206913577_cbbd5116ad_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1555" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjklehDEKjX7AxhvMAnodHovbMv6zT0dSIpFwbT4SKdbke_QCo57kqRA4lrWZlatIbBwAzE90SvSVVo6XK6Ytl9CjNoWaxjjvqYrODiYt20uv1wxAJX2eh8vtPZDMjo18zl5gISSdiQpXIv/s320/30206913577_cbbd5116ad_k.jpg" width="311" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My original plan for the border was just to use the ombre all the way around, but I really wanted the light part to be in the middle of each border and the dark in the corners. The fabric gradation wouldn't allow that, so I had to "stretch" the ombre to get the effect I wanted, so I used four of the remaining bird panels from the original fabric that I used for the center of the quilt, and inserted one into the middle of each border.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But I still needed to "stretch" the dark ends of the ombre into the corners. I finally had a brain-storm and decided to try making ombre nine-patch corner blocks and it worked perfectly!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRJwTnRQuXJZG9SvtFOEAfE7dHa0PnBOQKARbNNYyE1DLtLQiTXc-Ufw9cegIHVv8KUP8ItlWmPQQAOClWkiOGvWpFLa31Grkj68ggvkaK_9lfz4YvzNs9Gs2n89G7dhvqjbzYiRC8Zuxw/s1600/31271453378_2471e05e53_h.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1576" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRJwTnRQuXJZG9SvtFOEAfE7dHa0PnBOQKARbNNYyE1DLtLQiTXc-Ufw9cegIHVv8KUP8ItlWmPQQAOClWkiOGvWpFLa31Grkj68ggvkaK_9lfz4YvzNs9Gs2n89G7dhvqjbzYiRC8Zuxw/s320/31271453378_2471e05e53_h.jpg" width="315" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The fabric has a very subtle linear design in it, so I alternated the direction of the lines, horizontal and vertical, so the nine-patch effect shows up, but it's very subtle, almost looking like the corners are woven. It's exactly the look I was going for. <i>(Ignore those little yellow dots - I pinned the quilt to my design wall to take these pics.)</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once I finish quilting it, I will bind it with solid black, matching the narrow inner border.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I decided to share the pieced quilt top with you now, because it will likely be a few months before I'm able to start quilting it. But when I do, I'll posts more pics then.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the meantime, I have two customer quilts to make, and a Quilty-Trip coming up. I'm going to <a href="http://www.millcreeksew.com/quilting-on-the-bayfront-erie-pa.htm">Quilting on the Bayfront</a> in Erie PA next week! Can't wait! I'll tell you all about it in my next post.</div>

I haven't made any more progress on the quilt I shared on my last post (4 months ago - yikes!) but I had a very busy summer packed with friends, sewing, grandkids, retreats, etc. and I'm afraid that this blog fell by the wayside.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway, I'm looking forward to sharing my current project with you now, still a work-in-progress.</div>

Earlier this month, I presented a little talk/demo about One-Block Wonder Quilts at my local Quilt Guild's Semi-Annual Quilt Exhibit, and this is the quilt I started specifically for that demo.</div>

I bought an Artisan Batik Charm Roll a couple of months ago, and found them to be a perfect match for a charm square pack of Grunge fabrics that I already had. So, with no particular plan in mind, I sewed them all into blocks.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheDuyw8Onh5T6EgGePhnfZGMaQXHA0g3d5hriffY6F_gNxfJ0EleyxkN3E4WT-W36KrCwwlOYbFbf1Bfpqjibc4iJLdm5vnN25vSDGBNXRBxxsrO6F5DduezL_ZvIwe5s2Pg3E52s1MdIq/s1600/42358300752_8aa66b0c26_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheDuyw8Onh5T6EgGePhnfZGMaQXHA0g3d5hriffY6F_gNxfJ0EleyxkN3E4WT-W36KrCwwlOYbFbf1Bfpqjibc4iJLdm5vnN25vSDGBNXRBxxsrO6F5DduezL_ZvIwe5s2Pg3E52s1MdIq/s320/42358300752_8aa66b0c26_k.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have 4 of each of the 22 you see here, for a total of 88 blocks. I have been playing with several layout options on EQ, but haven't made a final decision yet.</div>
<br />
<ul><ul><ul>
<li style="text-align: left;">One large quilt, or two smaller ones...</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">With or without alternate blocks...</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">With or without sashing...</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Straight set or on-point with setting triangles...</li>
</ul>
</ul>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hmmm... decisions, decisions...</div>

Wow, it's been a busy month since I last posted about my <a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2018/04/urban-oasis-obw-is-done.html">Urban Oasis</a> quilt. I have since completed two T-Shirt quilts for a client, but can't share them yet because they are a surprise gift for the recipient. Don't want to spoil the surprise!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then I put some leftover pieces from my One-Block Wonder quilt, <a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2018/04/urban-oasis-obw-is-done.html">Urban Oasis</a> to good use. I had just enough scraps left over to make seven additional hexagon blocks, and once I made them, I realized how perfectly they went with this hand-dyed background fabric.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhheT1O4zFiybyQ1fb7hkEr3SWWWbYBwKWqXOyaa2ho35ruLxIJBC897fpBng1mqI_i76lP4CBIwVPXz14OwZCiTk3xiGK4sFR9Jd9x6VMyUBC7JFyaq-5XPkXeg2-ztRAC_bb2Ue0pKP9t/s1600/42309560851_02fa4a0822_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1354" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhheT1O4zFiybyQ1fb7hkEr3SWWWbYBwKWqXOyaa2ho35ruLxIJBC897fpBng1mqI_i76lP4CBIwVPXz14OwZCiTk3xiGK4sFR9Jd9x6VMyUBC7JFyaq-5XPkXeg2-ztRAC_bb2Ue0pKP9t/s320/42309560851_02fa4a0822_k.jpg" width="270" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I picked up a bundle of these hand dyed fabrics in various colors at MQX in Manchester NH a few years ago, and had been saving them for just the right project. This was the one!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I see a dark, stormy sky in this quilt, so I named it "Midnight Storm at the Oasis", since it was made as a companion quilt to the original One-Block Wonder quilt called "<a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2018/04/urban-oasis-obw-is-done.html">Urban Oasis</a>". It is a small wall quilt and I chose to use a facing instead of a binding.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I mulled over several different quilting options (at least a dozen!) before I settled on this one. And I'm so glad I did! I love how the variegated King Tut thread (from <a href="https://www.superiorthreads.com/">Superior Threads</a>) gives the illusion of rain over the entire quilt. The lines are about 1/4" apart, and I stitched it on my Juki TL2010Q using a walking foot.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am in love with the texture on this quilt! This is the first time I've used King Tut thread, and I love the short color transition, compared to other variegated threads. It changes color about every 1 1/2 inches or so.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

The quilting took a LONG time, but I am so happy with how it turned out. I quilted the center spiral on my Juki TL-2010 using the walking foot and Glide thread in white.</div>

Then I switched over to my APQS George sit-down longarm machine and quilted continuous curves in the remaining hexagons and straight-line piano keys in the border, using So Fine #50 thread in gray - all ruler work, so it took many many hours. Now I wish I had kept track of my time...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After auditioning about a dozen different binding fabric options, I finally decided on this aqua ombre. I love how it repeats the light aqua colors in the center of the quilt and adds an extra little zing.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used <a href="http://www.quiltersdreambatting.com/dream-green.htm">Quilter's Dream Green</a> batting in this quilt for the first time. I LOVE LOVE this batting! It quilts like butter, lays flat and smooth, has just the right amount of loft, and does not crease or shrink.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've always used cotton batting, but disliked the crease left when the quilt had been folded for any length of time. Bye Bye fold-lines! I think this will become my new go-to batting in the future.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Of course, there will still be occasions to use cotton, but it's nice to have a choice, based on the project. OH! And the other great thing about this batting is that it's made from recycled plastic bottles! I know, plastic doesn't sound appealing, but it really feels wonderful! Trust me!</div>

Instead of using a piece of the original Skyline fabric on the back or a border, as many quilters do, I decided to print an image of the fabric panel on my quilt label instead.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I named this quilt Urban Oasis because the original busy city skyline fabric magically morphs into a tranquil gazing pool in the finished quilt. It still amazes me that the entire center section of the quilt is created from just one fabric. It's a "Wonder"alright!</div>

For batting in this quilt, I'm using <a href="http://www.quiltersdreambatting.com/dream-green.htm">Quilters Dream Green</a> for the first time. So far, I'm really impressed! It feels wonderful and quilts great! I'm a cotton lover, and typically use Quilters Dream Cotton in all my quilts, but since I quilt on a sit-down machine, I wrestle the quilt around ALOT and the cotton tends to shed on the quilt top, leaving fuzzies all over. That's not really a problem, because I can clean them up with a lint-roller, but this Green batting doesn't seem to shed at all. I really think I'm going to like this stuff! And the fact that it's made from recycled plastic bottles is wonderful too - less trash in our landfills and oceans! Win Win!</div>

Now I have to set this quilt aside for a bit while we go visit our grandson and soak up some southern sunshine for a week. I'll post lots of pictures when it's done, probably mid-April, so be sure to check back.</div>

I pin-basted this last night so I can finally start quilting this baby! I finished piecing this one months ago, but set it aside until I finished some other quilts on my list, so it's been patiently waiting for some attention. I have a plan, and am so excited to work on this one!</div>

This week I finished the Hexagon Quilt. This is for my Daughter-in-law, and she picked out the fabric and pattern. For details about both, click <a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2018/02/a-stitch-in-color-new-quilt.html">here</a> for my previous post.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I quilted it with straight lines, roughly 1/2" apart, using my walking foot on my Juki domestic machine, using SoFine #50 thread in white. The batting is Quilters Dream Orient.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love the texture the closely spaced lines create, and just have to touch it every time I walk past.</div>

As I look back on my previous blog posts, I noticed how many of my recent projects have involved batik fabrics.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoNORcCMpe74-KAmCWmSJHaVdVNLNg7qEHdLrMMZoxwupV7w4UURZj4Zqr3TblZ8ahkMhImv795l1mOJoZxzRpmtF7fmMxNsWXRUoHpjY30_yC94Ky5kLfHrtca4UJTndfzs0YnJXJlW7f/s1600/38520084610_58bdca2574_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="709" data-original-width="1600" height="141" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoNORcCMpe74-KAmCWmSJHaVdVNLNg7qEHdLrMMZoxwupV7w4UURZj4Zqr3TblZ8ahkMhImv795l1mOJoZxzRpmtF7fmMxNsWXRUoHpjY30_yC94Ky5kLfHrtca4UJTndfzs0YnJXJlW7f/s320/38520084610_58bdca2574_k.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The more I use them, the more I love them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Some of the reasons are practical - because of the higher thread-count base fabric, they are crisp and flat and stable, so they finger-press very nicely. I can get nice accurate results in my finished quilts.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The other reasons are more aesthetic. The colors are just glorious, and the shading and prints are beautiful. I feel like an artist when I'm creating with batiks and the batiks are my paints.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But it's more than that...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh32eiofcZOkrNQPxXm6gyrZt9lNsTraA1s-X7Hbk1pG8LU3BtD1HVEXrqSQCfdzSfy2SBZsO7at8HnKW-ilFEKl0xJ0LFUJa-TfTj2w34RmFUg1dlkx_Xm00ZHAD07vo2g6Gs44Cl2ozfK/s1600/38520088950_0300eeb6eb_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="803" data-original-width="1600" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh32eiofcZOkrNQPxXm6gyrZt9lNsTraA1s-X7Hbk1pG8LU3BtD1HVEXrqSQCfdzSfy2SBZsO7at8HnKW-ilFEKl0xJ0LFUJa-TfTj2w34RmFUg1dlkx_Xm00ZHAD07vo2g6Gs44Cl2ozfK/s320/38520088950_0300eeb6eb_k.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
While I was pressing the fabrics for this latest set of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CottonCellar?ref=seller-platform-mcnav&section_id=22983582">batik placemats</a> to list on <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/CottonCellar">Etsy</a>, it hit me...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXygW7daEFuflHOJ-Yl2NM9K8Qn43AonbHsdyKhDCrdRMLTHBs2Yi7p4cXErb3nJ3dWPC6Ask1GeXWTS8KzoABiOrZ5U59sU-BU3XVwX3_yo6HVKMaaR3C6JcIc9VfqSTufj9ifw404rHr/s1600/38520080720_869130dd4b_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXygW7daEFuflHOJ-Yl2NM9K8Qn43AonbHsdyKhDCrdRMLTHBs2Yi7p4cXErb3nJ3dWPC6Ask1GeXWTS8KzoABiOrZ5U59sU-BU3XVwX3_yo6HVKMaaR3C6JcIc9VfqSTufj9ifw404rHr/s320/38520080720_869130dd4b_k.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It's the smell!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Have you ever noticed the odor of hot pressed batiks? When heated with an iron, the residual wax left in the fabric from the manufacturing process smells exactly like a new box of</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It takes me back to my childhood and the thrill of opening a brand-new box of crayons.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of my favorite things...</div>

I have a new quilt project to share with you today. I spent a snowy afternoon yesterday arranging all the units on my design wall. Looks like my design wall is just the right size for this one!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjt6sUayzH_DsZZXreJ0GdJdjGI3TQnd4OScPWh-RowatkcmBXGq_nARiuTZnevu9xfZfz2S208_P8HW_URjHAV-SzPFbjgYWlgjYKiMeqiUvC9r7YTjGujgOhDhUbWoBSQ7uELDnnG6h2/s1600/39432423844_b8f17c08cf_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjt6sUayzH_DsZZXreJ0GdJdjGI3TQnd4OScPWh-RowatkcmBXGq_nARiuTZnevu9xfZfz2S208_P8HW_URjHAV-SzPFbjgYWlgjYKiMeqiUvC9r7YTjGujgOhDhUbWoBSQ7uELDnnG6h2/s320/39432423844_b8f17c08cf_k.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My DIL sent me a jelly roll that she bought, and asked me to make her something with it. Together, we picked out the pattern, and after auditioning several background fabrics, finally decided on Kona White. It keeps the quilt very fresh and modern-looking.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCiwB7Lgi386F-Onv6ZqDxC2xxU-X5Ne1HebGBww6gHo-Q-3Xsyqy4uxTjZW-aThd0FhTExNh86Q6viz56v5WA6OZJD83Kb37ObJuzRK10tWQFxnTLcTOxc8vfxbo01E9eD6S1dRBmlWUZ/s1600/40111405372_9c0466b52d_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCiwB7Lgi386F-Onv6ZqDxC2xxU-X5Ne1HebGBww6gHo-Q-3Xsyqy4uxTjZW-aThd0FhTExNh86Q6viz56v5WA6OZJD83Kb37ObJuzRK10tWQFxnTLcTOxc8vfxbo01E9eD6S1dRBmlWUZ/s320/40111405372_9c0466b52d_k.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The fabric collection is <a href="http://www.unitednotions.com/fcc_a_stitch_in_color.pdf">A Stitch In Color</a> by Malka Dubrawsky for Moda.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The pattern is <a href="http://www.quiltylove.com/introducing-hexie-framed-quilt-pattern/">Hexie Framed</a> by Quilty Love.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I sewed all the white strips on to the half hexies at a quilting retreat a couple of weeks ago. Each piece had to be sewn, pressed, then trimmed. It's very repetitious - perfect for working on at a retreat while talking and laughing with friends. Yes, I whined a little, but it was so satisfying to know that I got them all done!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwIs1cQubEz23AjlzT8pybbAZb9UqEc2rBQaJyFl-oFhmIxnLRPXpBLYaCB24eXoMocynEcepQkLFNsbLq0rfQyKeq47OAU7WHUQ721OF0DemgBe6neoKu1Ioy8ofGlS5s2xTKFNZ4Ri-n/s1600/25272314347_d78508323c_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwIs1cQubEz23AjlzT8pybbAZb9UqEc2rBQaJyFl-oFhmIxnLRPXpBLYaCB24eXoMocynEcepQkLFNsbLq0rfQyKeq47OAU7WHUQ721OF0DemgBe6neoKu1Ioy8ofGlS5s2xTKFNZ4Ri-n/s320/25272314347_d78508323c_k.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now they are all stacked in rows and ready to sew together. Guess I know what I'll be doing for the next few days. (I write numbers on flower head pins with a sharpie to keep track of my rows.)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_qRMcaTDUC7kloSSqbJk80F1HeaYwuLkdPUFfflC8g96zR_v1x-poYLyyPk2bFycElehH1D7qKzVwwZ9ECUDwYC8vxwxfKrmDN84-dwvHvRWTLuw-KRa3Fb6FPHATV6ZZH0my0Pw5cmt8/s1600/25272318507_ed6fec6164_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_qRMcaTDUC7kloSSqbJk80F1HeaYwuLkdPUFfflC8g96zR_v1x-poYLyyPk2bFycElehH1D7qKzVwwZ9ECUDwYC8vxwxfKrmDN84-dwvHvRWTLuw-KRa3Fb6FPHATV6ZZH0my0Pw5cmt8/s320/25272318507_ed6fec6164_k.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And as an add-on, for those of you following my placemat progress, I shared pics of upcoming fabric collections in a previous post <a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2018/01/fabric-fun.html">(here)</a> and I have finished both sets and have listed them in my Etsy Shop, Cotton Cellar. You can click <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CottonCellar">here</a> to view the listings.</div>

The Batik Baby Quilt is labeled, bound, and on it's way to the new baby boy. I've done many baby quilts for this client, and she always asks for quilts that will grow with the baby into adult-hood, not too "baby-ish". This batik quilt fits the bill.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I quilted the center with straight lines, forming an 8-pointed star in each block, and used the same curved line design in the border that I used on the last baby quilt. All ruler work, done on my APQS George.</div>

It's so much fun to dig through my collection of batiks and pull fabrics for the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CottonCellar?ref=seller-platform-mcnav&section_id=22983582">placemats</a> I've been making to list in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CottonCellar">Etsy shop</a>. The color play is addictive! Can't wait to start sewing these together!</div>

Yesterday I finished piecing the top of this Batik Strip Quilt that I mentioned in my previous post. Borders are on and it's ready to baste and quilt, once I find a backing fabric. Time to go fabric shopping!</div>

I rang in the New Year in my Cotton Cellar, working on a custom quilt order. My client asked for a Winter palette of dark blue, green, and gray batiks, so this is what I selected. I think it's just what she requested.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6KusfW1gcLRydcq9CpWWu8EHaVVDrb44IaCx2u_uanGXZ89_J_g3gdCAlUwseLmtirBA6VDaGrrmgEy_3geeB2f_JZbtFe3rMQWJ3c1WciF3DJo_1AS3XOzAl9LDtyx_zmbYq4SOQLQow/s1600/38571847325_132e7dad58_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6KusfW1gcLRydcq9CpWWu8EHaVVDrb44IaCx2u_uanGXZ89_J_g3gdCAlUwseLmtirBA6VDaGrrmgEy_3geeB2f_JZbtFe3rMQWJ3c1WciF3DJo_1AS3XOzAl9LDtyx_zmbYq4SOQLQow/s320/38571847325_132e7dad58_k.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm using a Tube Strip Set technique I learned from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOWSp0mTTqE&t=300s">this Missouri Star Quilt Company video</a>. It's a duplicate of <a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2017/05/whats-new-george.html">this quilt</a> that my daughter pieced, and I finished for this same client, other than the color scheme.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd2S3q0UjNdPhIi5-EJcEp7lhl7zVACmb4oByPZ8VLmbYCkxbdvY19DnriU27LMNKtgp4o1H62DFKmyJun7COPXJ-ymy11BH0iKdkiRLLfnjms30LSFr74ScM4Wj_j3gMgAR4qNt4e66Tr/s1600/25580521498_1c11a4909c_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd2S3q0UjNdPhIi5-EJcEp7lhl7zVACmb4oByPZ8VLmbYCkxbdvY19DnriU27LMNKtgp4o1H62DFKmyJun7COPXJ-ymy11BH0iKdkiRLLfnjms30LSFr74ScM4Wj_j3gMgAR4qNt4e66Tr/s320/25580521498_1c11a4909c_k.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And while I was waiting for those batiks to arrive in the mail, I put the borders on my <a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2017/09/one-block-wonder-update.html">One Block Wonder</a> quilt. I hope to quilt it soon...</div>

After finishing my long list of Christmas Quilts, I was in the mood to try something different - and SMALLER - like placemats! The perfect small quilting project.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have a HUGE collection of batiks, so I spent a couple of days cutting some of the smaller pieces up into 5" Charm Squares. Now I have this wonderful palette to pick from when I am designing each set. Just like getting a jumbo box of new crayons when I was a kid. Such fun!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love the crisp "hand" of the batiks, and the "artsy" look they give to projects.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjGJKtUtJv4I_OYWwWPApwwD2RdKyutdgyo95beYJ71DnNGtd_ANxkllTS0MCBgbLMdznsQPU8klmQknVXzcu3QzwhbhCxH0MQcvX58PRAZI_NENykrGRc4aeSWMlNyMeIlPDeuSFoC-pP/s1600/39138618091_df16aa3e11_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjGJKtUtJv4I_OYWwWPApwwD2RdKyutdgyo95beYJ71DnNGtd_ANxkllTS0MCBgbLMdznsQPU8klmQknVXzcu3QzwhbhCxH0MQcvX58PRAZI_NENykrGRc4aeSWMlNyMeIlPDeuSFoC-pP/s320/39138618091_df16aa3e11_k.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
So far, I have completed two sets and have listed them in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CottonCellar">Cotton Cellar</a> Etsy Shop. Etsy now lets me add 10 pictures for each listing, so if you want to see more, including the gorgeous batik fabric I used for the backs, just <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CottonCellar">Click Here</a>. They are pretty enough to be reversible!<br />
<br />
I tried a new batting for this project, <a href="http://www.quiltersdreambatting.com/">Quilters Dream</a> 80/20 Fusion, and I have to say, this stuff is awesome! I haven't tried it in a quilt yet, but it's perfect for placemats! The fusible side is very, very subtle - just looks like a few light strands of spider web - but it holds perfectly. I used 505 basting spray to secure the tops, and the Fusion is fused to the backs.<br />
Love, Love, Love it!<br />
<br />
(note - while their website lists 2 Fusion options, Cotton or Poly, they have recently discontinued them and now offer an 80/20 blend of Fusion, which is what I used.)</div>

It's done! The first king-sized quilt I've quilted on my APQS George! This quilt was so satisfying to work on. I like to try different techniques on each quilt, and I sure got a lot of practice hours in on this one!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used a free-hand all-over holly leaf design in the center of this one, but followed a diagonal grid versus the random meandering holly leaf design I used in the previous Christmas quilt (<a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2017/11/merry-bright.html">here</a>). I didn't count them all, but that's a lot of holly leaves.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used a twisted rope design in the inner border, and straight lines/piano keys in the outer border.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thanks to the <a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2017/11/quilt-suspension-system.html">Quilt Suspension System</a> I installed, this 104" square quilt was a joy to work on.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used a pattern called <a href="http://www.hopesquiltdesigns.com/product/wander-through-the-woods-pdf-pattern">Wander Through the Woods by Hope Nelson</a>, but I enlarged both the size and number of the trees and added borders to scale it up to a king size.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So that is the last of the quilts I committed to finishing before Christmas. Now I can enjoy the season and start a new project.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Merry Christmas!</div>

I've been busy quilting the last Christmas Quilt on my list for this year. I was afraid I wouldn't get them all finished in time, but it looks like I'll have time to spare for a change!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I really don't know why I was so nervous about quilting a king-size quilt on George, because it's going really well. I still prefer making smaller quilts, but this is very do-able on this monster of a machine. I'm really enjoying the quilting process and if all goes well, I should finish quilting it this weekend, so check back soon for pictures of the finished quilt.</div>

I am happy to report that the <a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2017/11/quilt-suspension-system.html">Quilt Suspension System</a> I wrote about in my last post worked great for this large quilt! It's amazing how much easier it is to maneuver a large quilt when the bulk of it is held out of the way with the clamps. This quilt is 84" square, and I quilted it with an all-over freehand holly leaf design. The quilting is very dense (used 15 bobbins) and it gives the quilt an amazing texture. My DIL started this quilt about 10 years ago, and finally asked me to finish it for her, just to get it done. It was a perfect opportunity to practice doing a relatively large quilt, so now I feel ready to start my next challenge - 104" square! That's only an extra 20", right? Piece 'o cake!!! (I hope!!!)</div>

I made another change to my Quilting Setup for my APQS George machine. I added a Quilt Suspension System behind him.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have seen several variations of this on the internet, and since George's table is only 24" deep, there's not alot of space for a big quilt behind the machine. That's fine on a smaller quilt, but this one is 86" square, so I thought this would be a good time to try it out. It's amazing how much of a difference this makes! I leave enough slack in the quilt so that it moves freely, and adjust it as I move from one area to the next.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I followed <a href="http://www.bryerpatch.com/faq/machinequilting/mq.htm#Qcradle">these instructions</a> from Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry at Bryerpatch Studio. I did not use the upright posts, since I have exposed ceiling joists above me in my basement studio, I just screwed the eye screws directly into the joists.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Wow, I'm really behind on posting pictures of the Christmas Quilts I'm working on this year.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have finished Quilt #2... <a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2017/07/christmas-quilts-2-3.html"> (click here for more information about this quilt)</a> I quilted this one on my APQS George, using an all-over spiral swirl freehand design...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
...and I just finished the quilting on Christmas Quilt #3 today - on my George too, of course! The red binding is made and ready to attach next.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used a light aqua SoFine #50 thread and quilted it with closely spaced wavy lines going horizontally across the quilt. I love the texture it creates. And the snowflake fabric for the back is a great match for the quilt.</div>

I also finished piecing the top of <a href="http://cottoncellar.blogspot.com/2017/10/wander-through-woods.html">Christmas Quilt #4</a>. At 104" x 104", this quilt is a king size, so I am curious to see how it goes on my George machine. I'm sure the machine is up to the challenge - not sure about the operator...</div>

I have another Christmas Quilt on my work table this week. I'm using this <a href="http://hopesquiltdesigns.blogspot.com/2014/09/wander-through-woods-new-pattern.html">Wander Through The Woods pattern</a>. The pattern uses 2 1/2" strips, but I cut my strips at 4" wide to make the quilt king-sized, at my daughter's request. She is aware of the quilt, and provided most of the fabrics in it, so it's not a huge secret, but I still don't want to reveal too much of the quilt just yet. She needs a little surprise when Christmas gets here, assuming I get it done that is...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have all my strips made...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyfh-2RtDkAuomg5kTfYByIiI0jAk5-cmVxvZQC5eVy_flbl-P4GjV8WyBvMonTzHngaaknn9Rr775HdcWSfE2YosIePgI_DgvqjpqkSx1c-L3eJWtq8kjAhphFJidNXh-dCbt0dG7ihlq/s1600/23773060458_5a4b631d1c_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyfh-2RtDkAuomg5kTfYByIiI0jAk5-cmVxvZQC5eVy_flbl-P4GjV8WyBvMonTzHngaaknn9Rr775HdcWSfE2YosIePgI_DgvqjpqkSx1c-L3eJWtq8kjAhphFJidNXh-dCbt0dG7ihlq/s320/23773060458_5a4b631d1c_k.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
...and have this huge pile of trimmed off triangles left over.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I bet there's enough there to make another small quilt! Part of me says "throw them in the trash" because after all - what are the odds that I'll actually get around to doing something with them... But then I look at all these pretty little triangles and the wheels start turning...</div>

There is a Juried Art Quilt Exhibit at the <a href="https://gmeinerartscenter.com/">Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center</a> here in Wellsboro. One of my quilts has been accepted, along with quilts from several of my quilting friends in the area. The opening reception is this Friday October 6th from 5pm-7pm and the exhibit runs through October 29th. Please come and see all the quilts!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a sneak peek at my quilt, called "Interleave Vase".</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have wanted to make an Interleave quilt for quite a while now, so this was the perfect opportunity to try something new. The fall colors in this quilt are so much more brilliant in person - hope to see you at the show!</div>

I put the pedal to the metal this week and got all my rows sewn together on my One-Block Wonder quilt. I have to admit, I'm in love with this quilt.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was tedious sewing, with pressing all the seams open and lining up all those intersections, but worth every minute (hour).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still plan on adding borders, but will mull the options over while I'm busy getting my Christmas quilts finished. Priorities... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A close-up shot. My favorite hexagon in the entire quilt is the aqua one just to the right of center with the skinny orange spikes.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And in case you missed an earlier post, this is the fabric I used. Skyline by Hoffman Fabrics. I cut my 60 degree triangles simultaneously from 6 identical stacked panels, cut from the 7+ yards I bought. One quilt from just one fabric.
